Slide overload reduces your audience's ability to comprehend your message.
As attendees struggle to make sense of a busy slide, they are not listening effectively to your presentation.
This problem is worse in a Web seminar than in a live one because your slides are usually a little smaller (in numbers of pixels), so busy slides become even messier.
Slides are not meant to be the script of your presentation. Slides serve two purposes: 1) to highlight your key points succinctly; 2) to graph or diagram key data. Here's a good rule of thumb:
- No more than 8 bullets per slide
- No more than 8 words per bullet
- Always try to substitute a diagram or visual for text
Editing is hard work, but essential for superb communication.

People who communicate strategically understand that all effective communications begin with the audience in mind. Too often we fail to spend enough time analyzing our audience before starting to develop a presentation. All audience members are asking themselves: So what? Who cares? What's in it for me? It's vitally important that you answer these questions first. Ask yourself: Is this presentation to inform? To persuade? To motivate? If your presentation is to inform, what do you want the audience to know? If you are there to persuade, what do you want the audience to feel? If your goal is to motivate, what do you want them to do?
Surveys show that people decide in the first seven seconds whether they are interested in what you are saying. The bottom line is that you have a small window to captivate your audience. Are they going to listen or make a grocery list? If you answer the questions of "so what?", "who cares?", and "what's in it for me?" and the odds of the audience tuning in increase.

Good transitions are critical to an effective presentation. They help tie your presentation together and make it flow smoothly from one idea to the next. Plus, transitions signal important ideas so your audience pays extra attention.
Depending on the software program, transition effects also can be used with graphics such as tables, charts and graphs. You can add transitions and movement to individual slices of a pie chart, bars in a bar graph, rows in a table or levels of an organization chart.
It's becoming easier and easier to apply transition effects as the publishers of presentation software continue to improve their products. Newer programs offer more transition effects and they're easier to apply. Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows, for example, offers you more control over the number of elements that you can apply transition effects to, easier access to transition effects and better preview capabilities, allowing you to try out various transition effects before applying them.
